The Newton Mentoring Program was developed to provide much-needed individual support for public school students, K-12. In Newton County, Georgia, there is a high incidence of poverty with 53% of the system’s school children receiving a free or reduced lunch. The connection of poverty to school performance and diminished prospects is strongly felt.
We recruit, train and place adult mentors during each school year. The mentors will learn strategies that will help them address the needs of their mentees in personal as well as academic areas. The mentees will learn good character traits and values by having a one-on-one relationship with an adult, non-academic, non-parental person who is interested in their development.
