About Us Become a MentorThe Newton Mentoring Program is a grass-roots organization that was developed in 2008 to provide much-needed individual support for public school students, K-12, with every school in the district participating. We recruit and train adult mentors to work with students in the Newton County School System. A similar program was started in Athens/Clarke County 17 years ago with 35 mentors. In the 2008-2009 school year, they will have over 900 mentors participating in the program. The Covington-Newton County Chamber of Commerce provides office space on an in-kind basis. The Newton County School System will assign one counselor at each school to work with the program’s director in assigning mentees to mentors. As a non-profit organization, all other financial support must come from individual contributions and grants. We are fiscally responsible and good stewards of all the support we receive. Our Board of Directors volunteers their time and effort. Our staff consists of one part-time Director. All members of the Board have built strong relationships with educators in both the public school system and the various institutions of higher learning located in Newton County (DeKalb Tech, Georgia Perimeter College, Oxford College and Troy University). Board of Directors: Chairman – John Boothby, President, Covington-Newton County Chamber of Commerce
